New Year’s Resolutions

by Dr. Trevor Holly Cates

This year for New Year’s my family and has decided to start off by remembering the importance of protecting our health and our valuable resources. Reduce, reuse, recycle — reduce waste, reuse auld (old) items as long as possible, and recycle (and use recycled products).

To start fresh, we’re cleaning house and getting rid of the things we no longer need. Passing on items (rather than throwing them out) to people and organizations that are in need, is one way of reusing and recycling.

When bringing new items into our home, we plan to choose carefully. We’ll select toys, clothing, household items and such that are well-made and of eco-friendly materials. Our hope is to buy less and keep things longer.

We also plan to have our home appliances checked for efficiency and serviced to make sure we are not wasting gas and electricity. Our next step will be to look into switching over to solar and wind power.

While we’ll keep our auld friends and acquaintances, we’ll remember our eco-conscious resolutions for 2008.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne…
