Have a Green, Not Blue, Christmas!

by Blake Frino

Christmas is just around the corner, and for those of you who have yet to decorate the tree, try going a little green. Use recycled and handmade ornaments, while wrapping the tree with LED lights, which use much less energy, reduce pollution from power plants and last longer.

LED white or colorful string lights can be purchased at select stores or online. These eco-efficient lights will make your tree shine so much more, especially with the fact that they won’t add to the greenhouse gas emissions.

When it comes to adding the little adornments, don’t worry about garnishing the whole tree. Unless you plan on putting it in the center of the room, you only need to fill up about half of the tree. Look for ornaments in second-hand stores or ask family and friends if they have any extra tree trimmings they no longer use. In the end, you will save money and reduce waste.

Christmas may be your favorite time of the year and decorations might be something you really enjoy. I surely do. And there really isn’t any other way to get into the spirit other than creating your own décor. Use some recycled paper or reuse some old holiday cards and cut out small shapes, such as a snowman, circle, snowflake or angel. Color with paint, markers, or stamps; then punch a hole at the top; and slide recycled wire (i.e. a bobby pin) or hemp twine through to make a lovely ornament. You can get as creative as you wish when you decorate your ornaments - reuse beads, shells, ribbon, and other spare trinkets.

Only have time for online shopping? Go to our “Holiday Specials” products section to find World of Good’s hand crafted holiday ornaments, ranging from $8.95-$11.95. Created by artists (and even families) from other countries, your purchase will support worthy organizations, while not contributing to landfills. The unique, recycled and fair trade delights will spark up your eco-conscious Christmas tree.

Light up that Christmas tree with green glee and relish in the warmth of good it brings!
